Obtaining FreeBSD

Written by Greg King Thursday, 02 July 2009 18:29

The easiest way to obtain FreeBSD is if you have a cd-burner and a fast internet connection.  If not, you might still want to go to the FREEBSD home website (http://www.freebsd.org/where.html) and look at their purchase information.

You want to download the latest release version for your cpu platform.  If you don't know what that is, you might not be ready to run an advanced operating system and should quit now before you expend energy.

You should download the release as an ISO so you can burn that to your cd-rom or dvd-rom depending upon your media availability.  I don't recommend downloading more than the disc1.iso if you are using cd-roms.  If you are using dvd, then by all means get the dvd iso.

The reason you don't want more than disc1 of the cd set is that we will be updating our install via the ports collection later.  Most of the applications available on the other disc iso sets are antiquated by the time they are published so you will be getting newer versions of the applications at that point.

When you have burned the cd-rom image and can boot from it, continue to the next article!
